Tamworth Castle – Victorian celebrations and illuminations
Get ready for a stunning fusion of history and creativity at Tamworth Castle as we celebrate all things Victorian during this year’s February half-term.
Castle illumination – Friday 13 February
Kick off your half-term week with a special evening event. On Friday 13 February, Tamworth Castle will be illuminated in a beautiful 10-minute projection from 7.30pm at the Bandstand in the Castle Grounds. The illumination will provide a preview of the upcoming exhibition ‘Threads of Victoria’ and feature a rich blend of student photography, video, sketches, garment designs, and reflections from students involved in this collaborative project with South Staffordshire College.
The Victorian-themed display will be accompanied by period music and public-friendly interpretation, offering a glimpse into the heritage that makes Tamworth such a historically rich town.
Exhibition launch – Saturday 14 February
The highly anticipated ‘Threads of Victoria’ exhibition opens on Saturday 14 February and runs until 15 March in the withdrawing room at Tamworth Castle. This special exhibition features:
- 22 Victorian-inspired garments and undergarments made by local students
- Selected Victorian objects from Tamworth Castle’s own collections
- Historic sample fabrics from Queen Victoria’s dresses
The exhibition provides an intriguing look at Victorian fashion, as well as the legacy of Queen Victoria’s visit to Tamworth.
Family activities and Victorian craft workshops
To enhance your experience, the Victoriana family trail will run throughout half-term, offering a fun, interactive journey through the castle, designed for children and families. Additionally, Victorian craft workshops will be available on select days, giving visitors the chance to get hands-on with Victorian-inspired activities.
Workshop Dates:
- Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February, 10am – 4.30pm.
- Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 February, 10am – 4.30pm.
Led by historical costumier Maya Howes, these hands-on sessions will feature Victorian embroidery, hand-stitching with fabrics inspired by the era, and Victorian paper doll making. Whether you’re new to crafts or a seasoned enthusiast, these workshops provide a wonderful way to experience Victorian traditions up close. Workshops are included with general admission, though spaces are limited, so early arrival is encouraged.
Torc craft activity
This half term, Tamworth Castle also invites families to step back in time and explore the fascinating world of the Glascote Torc, a stunning gold neck collar discovered in 1943 near Tamworth. Regarded as one of the finest examples of Celtic craftsmanship, the Glascote Torc is a true local treasure, and now, visitors can get hands-on with history by creating their own torcs.
Inspired by this remarkable discovery, participants will have the chance to design and craft their very own torcs using provided materials. Learn about the ancient symbolism behind torcs worn by chieftains and leaders as symbols of wealth and status and try your hand at making a piece of history.
The Glascote Torc is proudly displayed in the castle’s Saxon gallery alongside treasures from the Staffordshire Hoard. This activity is free to join and suitable for ages three and up. Please note children must be accompanied by an adult.
No booking is necessary—just come along, be creative, and take home your own torc.
