Town centre walking and cycling improvements project begins

A project to improve walking and cycling routes in Cannock town centre begins this week.

The 12-week scheme will see new shared cycle routes, upgraded crossing points and widened footways in Mill Street, Church Street and Ringway, as well as a new link from Allport Road to Beecroft Road car park.

A total of £500,000 is being invested in the project thanks to an allocation from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. The project is due to be completed at the end of March.

The scheme includes:

  • An upgrade to the existing puffin crossing on A34 Ringway to a toucan crossing
  • A shared footway/cycleway along Church Street between Hednesford Road and Allport Road on the northern side
  • Improved footway between Mill Street and Church Street and access to Chase Centre Retail Park
  • Provision of new link from Beecroft Road Car Park to Allport Road
  • Improvements to uncontrolled crossings, street lighting and traffic signs

During the works period, traffic management will be needed so that it can be carried out safely. This will include a closure of the Hednesford Road/Lichfield Road junction for one to two days, which will be publicised nearer the time.

Other traffic management includes lane closures on Church Street between Queens Square roundabout and Lichfield Road roundabout, a lane closure on A34 Ringway in both directions between Beecroft Road car park and Queens Square roundabout and lane closures on A34 Mill Street between Queens Square roundabout and Mill Street.

Anyone wanting further information can find out more on the project webpage.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said:

“This scheme will bring major improvements to cyclists and pedestrians in Cannock town centre – bringing better connectivity and contributing to its regeneration.

“It’s a significant investment through the LUF programme which we hope will encourage active travel participation.

“The scheme will take 12 weeks and we will need to put temporary traffic management in place. We appreciate this is a busy town centre location but would ask for people to allow extra travel time during this period and apologise for any inconvenience.”
