Exciting Updates and News From Newcastle – March Highlights

Newcastle-under-Lyme is set for a positive month with new business openings and community initiatives aimed at enhancing the town centre.

New Business Openings:

The Block relocates from Longton. An arts studio for community, inclusivity and creativity is expanding its creative space at Unit 2/3 The Barracks. Four fantastic artists all now based in Newcastle.

  • Hojo Hattery led by Holly brings handmade one-of-a-kind hats to the area, continuing the town’s hat-making heritage.
  • Circus performer and costume maker Eve, whose family’s circus workshops began at The Barracks in 1994 will offer workshops on circus skills, clowning and more.
  • Along with Rug tufting artist Emily from Bon Tuft and giant puppet maker Richard from Red Thing Creations will also be joining The Block in their new home.

Hazel’s Emporium Antiques & Collectibles – Hazel and Stephen, the husband-and-wife duo behind a beloved collection of antiques, collectables and vintage clothing are excited to announce their return to a larger space. Relocating from Longton the pair have expanded their venture and are now offering their unique finds in a new location, opposite the historic Queens Gardens. 4 – Queens Parade.

British Heart Foundation – The British Heart Foundation officially opened its doors last week at 2 Castle Walk, the former site of Wilkinsons.

Reclaim The Night Walk:

Newcastle BID are inviting women and girls to Reclaim the Night on Thursday 10th April from 7:30-8:30pm. Join a group walk through Newcastle to raise awareness and demand safer streets for women and girls. In partnership with YMCA North Staffordshire and Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, this event aims to support Staffordshire’s Violence Against Women and Girls Week of Action.

The walk will begin at the Women’s Safe Space (Lancaster Building, Ironmarket) and is open to women of all ages. Free women’s safety devices will be available for all attendees.

Lymelight Festival returns for 2025:

Newcastle BID are bringing back Lymelight Festival this May Bank Holiday! A weekend of incredible FREE live music across two stages and multiple local venues, showcasing the best of the local music scene. All set alongside street food stalls and the Castle Artisan Market. Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th May.

Town Tidy-Up & Safety Initiative’s launched:

The BID are working with local partners to deliver monthly sessions for businesses and the community, to promote a cleaner and safer town.

  • Town Tidy Litter Picks: Join the BID team on the last Tuesday of each month to help Clean up Castle, join as a community and take pride in our surroundings. Next meeting on Tuesday 29th April at The Guildhall from 12 PM. All equipment is provided, and volunteers can enjoy a tea or coffee at the BID office afterward.
  • Safety Drop-in: A monthly meeting with Newcastle BID, Staffordshire Police & the Borough Council to discuss crime prevention and town centre safety. Held in the Women’s Safe Space on the last Thursday of each month at 9:30-12:30pm.
  • Spiking Awareness Courses: Nighttime economy businesses in Newcastle are invited to attend free essential Spiking Awareness Training designed for all licensed premises in Newcastle-under-Lyme. These sessions will provide crucial knowledge on how to identify, prevent and respond to drink spiking incidents, ensuring a safer night out for all.
