Arbie the Owl to make autumnal activities a hoot at the National Memorial Arboretum

This October Half Term (27 – 31 October), families can discover the vibrant autumn colours of the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, while taking part in a programme of exciting seasonal activities. From new outdoor trails to storytelling sessions and creative arts and crafts, there’s something for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

Arbie Eye Spy (£2.50 per trail, 10am – 5pm)

Visitors are invited to join Arbie, the Arboretum’s friendly owl character and the star of its first-ever children’s book, ‘Arbie and the magical lights’, in this brand-new trail which invites families to help Arbie discover autumnal treasures among the 150-acre site’s colourful leaves and captivating scenery. With picturesque gardens and woodlands to explore, it’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and share the magic of the season alongside the Arboretum’s fluffy companion.

Interactive storytelling (FREE, selected times throughout the day)

Listen to the Arboretum’s very own ‘Arbie and the magical lights’ book through sensory-based, immersive storytelling sessions. Children will be encouraged to help Arbie understand the visual changes that are happening to the site around them. Advance booking on the Arboretum’s website is advanced to guarantee your preferred session time.

Drop-in arts and crafts (FREE, 11am – 3pm)

Inspired by Arbie’s book and the Arboretum’s new autumnal trail, younger visitors are encouraged to unleash their creativity through an array of drop-in arts and crafts sessions. Using the Arboretum’s rich colours and the vast woodlands, visitors can take inspiration from the landscape as they make their creations come alive.

Outdoor play areas (FREE, daily throughout 2025, 10am – 4pm)

The Arboretum offers two outdoor play areas. The Children’s Sensory Play Garden is located near the Remembrance Centre, and a second play area with a picnic spot can be found further into the Arboretum’s grounds.

“We encourage visitors of all ages to explore the beauty of our grounds this October Half Term,” said Rachel Smith, Head of Participation and Learning at the National Memorial Arboretum. “With a brand-new Arbie-themed autumnal trail, arts and crafts, and immersive storytelling sessions, our latest programme is packed full of fun for the whole family.”

The Arboretum’s ongoing commemorative programme, ‘The Year Was 1945…’ will also continue to run every day until 16 November. Activities include: VJ Day guided walks, self-led trails and multiple exhibitions.

Entry to the National Memorial Arboretum is free of charge. Booking in advance via the Arboretum website is recommended to guarantee entry and to save on parking (£5 in advance, £8 on the day).
