Lichfield District Council unveils vision for new Linear Park – a green gateway to the city

Lichfield District Council has revealed exciting plans for the creation of a new Linear Park – a wide, landscaped green avenue that will transform the approach from Lichfield City Station into the heart of the city.

Running through the Birmingham Road Site, the Linear Park will create an attractive, welcoming space filled with trees, hedges, footpaths, seating and natural play areas – a place where residents, families, and visitors can relax, meet, and enjoy the outdoors.

Spanning around 23 metres wide and covering nearly a third of the development site, the Linear Park will become a key link between the new cinema and plaza, future residential areas, the Lichfield Garrick Theatre, and the historic city centre.

Councillor Andy Smith, Lichfield District Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Leisure and Major Projects, said: “The redevelopment of the Birmingham Road Site is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a welcoming gateway that reflects the character, creativity and ambition of our district.

“The Linear Park will be a vibrant green corridor that celebrates nature, connects key destinations, and offers a calm, open space for people to enjoy right at the heart of Lichfield.”

The Linear Park is a central feature of the wider City Centre Masterplan, which aims to enhance connections between the station and the city, boost the local economy, and strengthen Lichfield’s reputation as a great place to live, visit, and invest.

The first phase of the site’s transformation included the demolition of the former multi-storey car park, while work is now underway to redevelop the former Debenhams store into the Everyman cinema and new public plaza, set to open in 2026.

The first residential zone on the site has also been sold, marking further progress in delivering a high-quality, mixed-use destination for the district.

Planning permission for the Linear Park is expected to be sought in early 2026.
