Guest blog: Distilling dreams in Staffordshire

From turning a passion for craft spirits into a thriving Staffordshire business, David Hunter, co-founder of Chuckle Engine Spirit Company, shares the story behind the brand. In this guest blog, David reflects on the inspiration behind the business, the importance of craftsmanship and community, and why Staffordshire was the natural home for their growing spirits company. He also explains how collaborations with local businesses and membership of Made in Staffordshire are helping Chuckle Engine continue its journey of creating memorable spirits with character, quality and a touch of mischief.

“Sue and I never set out simply to make gin, rum and vodka.  We wanted to create spirits with personality – drinks that start conversations, bring people together and create moments worth remembering.”

Every great business starts with a spark.  For Chuckle Engine Spirit Company, that spark came from a passion for exceptional craft spirits, a love of creativity and a belief that making something memorable is about far more than what goes into the bottle.

After years of experience in hospitality, customer service and the craft spirits industry, Sue and I decided it was time to take everything we had learned and create something of our own.

Chuckle Engine does not just distil spirits: we bottle delight.

We are an independent Staffordshire craft spirits company, producing small-batch gin, vodka and rum with a focus on quality, character and a little bit of mischief.  We believe a great spirit should invite curiosity – making people pause, discover something new and enjoy the experience as much as the drink itself.

Whether it is a distinctive gin shared with friends, a smooth sipping rum enjoyed slowly, or a vodka that challenges expectations, our aim is to create spirits people remember – not just for the flavour, but for the experience that comes with them.

The name Chuckle Engine reflects exactly what we are about. Our “engine” runs on three fuels: craftsmanship, because excellence should never be rushed; character, because every spirit deserves a story; and chuckle, because enjoyment and a sense of fun are the finest ingredients of all.

Why Staffordshire?

Choosing Staffordshire as the home for Chuckle Engine was a natural decision.  This is a county with a proud history of making things, from its world-renowned manufacturing heritage to the many skilled producers, makers and innovators who continue that tradition today.

For us, Staffordshire represents the perfect balance of heritage and ambition.  It is a place where craftsmanship matters, where people value quality and where independent businesses are encouraged to grow.

What really stands out is the sense of community.  Businesses support each other, share experiences and take pride in what is created locally.  Being part of that community means being surrounded by people who understand the importance of doing things properly.

We have already experienced the benefits of those connections.  We are particularly excited to be working alongside Chef Liam Dillon and his team at The Boat, one of Staffordshire’s Michelin-starred restaurants.  Together, we are developing bespoke spirits that reflect the same commitment to craftsmanship, provenance and quality that has earned The Boat national recognition.

This partnership represents everything special about doing business in Staffordshire.  Independent businesses are not simply neighbours; they become collaborators, combining creativity, expertise and passion to create something genuinely unique.

Building a New Business

Starting a new business is both exciting and challenging.  Turning an idea into a working distillery requires dedication, patience and a willingness to learn every day.

From developing recipes and refining production processes to introducing our spirits to customers, every stage has brought new experiences.  The challenges make the journey rewarding, especially when we see customers enjoying something we have created.

Hearing that a bottle of Chuckle Engine has been part of a celebration, a gift, a gathering with friends or simply a relaxing evening at home reminds us why we started this journey.

Quality has always been at the heart of what we do.  We do not believe in taking shortcuts; great spirits come from thoughtful craftsmanship, careful distillation and attention to detail.  That commitment is reflected in the consistent five-star reviews we receive from customers who appreciate not only the quality of our spirits but also the story behind them.

Joining Made in Staffordshire

Becoming a member of Made in Staffordshire was an important milestone for us.  As a relatively new business, joining a recognised community of Staffordshire producers, makers and manufacturers gives us the opportunity to connect with like-minded businesses and share our story with a wider audience.

For us, Made in Staffordshire represents much more than a logo.  It represents pride, trust and a shared belief that making locally matters.

Membership helps raise our profile, create new connections, discover collaborations and reach customers who actively want to support local producers. It shines a light on the incredible talent, creativity and craftsmanship that exists across the county.

Looking Ahead

Supporting local businesses, producers and makers helps communities thrive.  Every time someone chooses a locally made product, they support the people, skills and stories behind it.

At Chuckle Engine, we are proud that every bottle carries a little piece of our journey, our passion and our Staffordshire roots.

As we continue our Made in Staffordshire journey, we look forward to developing new spirits, creating collaborations and introducing more people to what we make here in Staffordshire.

For any Staffordshire business considering joining Made in Staffordshire, we would encourage you to find out more.  Whether you are a producer, maker, manufacturer or creative business, it is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what you do and become part of a community that champions local talent.

At Chuckle Engine Spirit Company, we are proud to be Made in Staffordshire.  We are proud to make here, proud to belong here, and excited to keep the engine running.
