Homefront on the West Front at Lichfield Cathedral for the Launch of The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War

This May Bank Holiday, Lichfield Cathedral is inviting families to step into the world of wartime Britain at a special Launch Day celebration on Monday 4 May, marking the arrival of the national touring exhibition The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War.

From 10.00–12.00, families can enjoy a range of hands‑on activities inspired by life on the Home Front, including:

  • An opportunity to see WWII jeeps from The Military Vehicle Trust
  • Displays by local Cadets
  • Exploring wartime crops grown on the homefront with our “Dig for Victory” crafts
  • Helping “Dr Carrot” to find the healing plants for The Secret Plant Army trail
  • Getting involved in the latest community crafting project

The morning also marks the official launch of a brand‑new community craft project. Over the next 18 months, Lichfield Cathedral and The Fabric Vault are inviting makers of all ages and abilities to contribute knitted, crocheted or sewn poppies to create a spectacular poppy display, to be unveiled for Remembrance 2027.

Visitors will be able to pick up patterns, ask questions, and even create their first poppy on the day.

Philippa Hubbard, Public Programme Coordinator at Lichfield Cathedral said: “This Bank Holiday celebration is a wonderful opportunity for families to learn together, make together and take part in a project that will become part of Lichfield Cathedral’s remembrance for years to come. Everyone is welcome – whether you’re a seasoned crafter or simply curious!”

The Launch Day activities are free to attend, with donations welcome.

Families are encouraged to stay afterward to explore the internationally renowned exhibition The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War, on display throughout May.

The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War exhibition is kindly sponsored by Interior Choice.
