MUSEUM EVENT CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Families can enjoy an afternoon of culture and fun ahead of Black History Month.
Brampton Museum, a popular service provided by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, is hosting a special event on Saturday, 27 September which celebrates diverse black presences in Staffordshire and beyond during the 19th and early 20th century.
Delivered in collaboration with Staffordshire group Kwanzaa Collective UK, “Black Victorians” features a pop-up exhibition, short film screening, workshops, talks, living history and creative opportunities as well as an animated talk on performance art by Jeanefer Jean-Charles MBE, a globally respected director and choreographer, who will guide visitors through the creative process behind her famous dance – inspired by an ongoing research programme that is unearthing unseen photographs from old archives – which has toured museums and outdoor festivals nationally and internationally. The presentation includes demonstrations from dancers in full costume.
The drop-in event, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, runs from 12pm to 5pm and admission is free. A range of hot food, cakes and drinks will be available to purchase from the Little Vintage Tea Room. More information is available online.

“Black History Month, taking place in October, gives everyone the opportunity to share, understand and celebrate the impact of black heritage and culture. Working with the excellent Kwanzaa Collective UK, who are based in Newcastle, we’re proud to offer
residents of all ages a free, educational and engaging afternoon of fun and creativity.”
As well as free, on-street parking on Brampton Road, there is a free car park at the bottom of Brampton Park in addition to a limited number of spaces next to the museum.
