People who have an inspirational friend or colleague who is a Staffordshire resident are being urged to nominate them for a place in the Queen’s Baton Relay team ahead of this year’s Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Community nominees should be someone who:

  • Is always willing to take on a challenge and has a unique and inspiring story

  • Is a figure of inspiration that positively challenges others to achieve their best
  • Has taken on a challenge or cause and made a positive impact within their community

Staffordshire is playing its part in Birmingham 2022 by hosting two events – mountain biking on the trails of Cannock Chase and part of the road cycling time trials, with the course taking in a short section in South Staffordshire.

Nominations for the QBR are now open and close on February 14. The minimum age for nominees is 12 and under 18s will need permission from a parent or guardian to be nominated and accept a position.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for communities and culture Victoria Wilson said:

“Being part of the Queen’s Baton Relay is a once in a lifetime opportunity as the games comes to our county. It’ll be especially memorable during this jubilee year.

“We’re certainly not short of inspirational people in Staffordshire, so I’d urge their friends and relatives to nominate them in recognition of their achievements or how they’ve made a difference to others.

“We’re pleased and excited to be playing our part as a county in hosting two events, which will be a great spectacle for our residents and help to put us on the map internationally. The Queen’s Baton Relay is a fitting way to mark the build-up to the games.”

There will be over 2,000 baton bearers across England and over 7,500 across the Commonwealth. Each participant will carry the baton 200 metres. Nominations close at 5pm on February 14.
